DJ Monkey a.k.a Calvin Yaw is one person who should never be judged by his stage name. He is above all things extremely serious about perfecting his craft and definitely does not “monkey” around when it come to art of turntablism. A relative new comer to the scene, DJ Monkey has matured quickly into notable DJ known for his unique sets and precision on the decks.
Known to his friends as Calvin, DJ Monkey has been DJing for over 3 years. That however has not stopped him from attaining numerous club residency positions. This young lad has a penchant for mixing current hits with a twist of old school jams and quirky mash ups. Originally a trance and house DJ, Calvin has transcended musical borders to include hip-hop and R&B music into his sets as well.
At only 21 years of age, DJ Monkey is largely a self taught DJ receiving only minimal tutoring from friends. His work ethic, working round the clock to fine tune his DJ skills, is a testament to his dedication and passion for the art of turntablism.
Entering the local club circuit in 2006, DJ Monkey has been getting rave reviews from the media and party-goers alike. His greatest achievement thus far is opening for world renowned DJ, JAZZY JEFF at Poppy Garden Kuala Lumpur in 2007. DJ Monkey’s set was very well received by the crowd and caught the attention of the Kartel Hitmen collective. He also shared a same stage and played alongside international djs like Jazzy Jeff (USA) of "Fresh Prince Of Bel Air" fame, DJ D (AUS), DJ Sleeq (INA), Simon Sez (AUS), DJ Kay-Z (AUS), DJ Babey Drew (USA) Official Chris Brown DJ , DJ Moto275 (AUS), Che'Nelle (AUS) of "I Fell In Love With The DJ", Rafik (DE) 6x DJ World Champion, Kid Fresh (HK) DMC, ITF Champion, DJ Cash Money (USA) DMC Champion, DJ Miss Yellow (HK).
It was then did the Kartel Hitmen extend an invitation of DJ Monkey to join their collective. Without a moment's hesitation, DJ Monkey jumped at the opportunity to join the Kartel Hitmen, a collective that has been making all the right headline as of late. Personally headhunted by and taken under the wings of the legendary DJ T-bone himself, DJ Monkey now has the entire industry watching his development as a DJ and turntablist.
All things aside, DJ Monkey is going all out to prove that he is more than just another DJ. He is one of the finalist among 8 others in DMC Championship Malaysian Finals 2008. Real music heads have started to take this young gun seriously and it is only a matter of time before the entire music community realizes the potential DJ Monkey possesses.
